Output level vs. frequency.

It shapes your tone by up to ±65.8 dB on purpose — that built-in curve is part of its sound.

THD   THD+N. THD is the trustworthy figure; THD+N is method-floor-limited at low levels.

It adds clear harmonic color (2.6% at full level) — the grit and warmth this design is meant to give.

Background hiss sits at -70 dBFS — you may notice it on very quiet parts at high gain.

How hard you push it changes what it does (a 5 dB gap between levels) — expected for a saturator, which reacts to input level.

It delays the audio by 248 samples (5.2 ms at 48 kHz) and reports that delay, so your DAW lines it back up.

What these measurements mean

read from the numbers above · character / coloring design

On the bench it behaves like a coloring tool, scoring 4.5/10 on how clean its signal path is; its tone-shaping and harmonics are reported as character, not graded as faults. It shapes your tone by up to ±65.8 dB on purpose — that built-in curve is part of its sound. It adds clear harmonic color (2.6% at full level) — the grit and warmth this design is meant to give. Measured score 4.5/10 — signal-path noise floor (the shaping and harmonics are the design's intent, shown as character, not graded). How scoring works.

What people report

7.6/10 published & press sentiment, 2 sources · a separate figure from the measured score

Consistently praised

  • It excels at gritty, nostalgic lo-fi tape character, with the Wear control repeatedly named the standout for adding pleasing texture and break-up without turning to mush.
  • It's easy to use and includes gain compensation, so heavy drive doesn't simply make everything louder, and the tone knob behaves like a musical tilt EQ.
  • Playful extras such as wow and flutter, mechanical noise, tape-stop and the flywheel spin-down make it fun and open up chorus-style and wind-down tricks.

Common criticism

  • It's a deliberately one-note tool aimed only at lo-fi grit, and it neither attempts nor achieves clean, hi-fi tape emulation.
  • At its standalone price some felt it's poor value for such a single-purpose effect and recommend getting it inside the FX Collection instead.
  • The preamp section is only serviceable, and the effect can be heavy-handed, working best on sounds you intend to tuck back in the mix.

A review score is shown only when at least two independent sources — published reviews or genuine user discussion — return usable text. Launch or announcement coverage alone does not qualify, so some plugins read N/A here while still carrying a full measured score above.
